Amazon Luna Faces Backlash as Service Features Diminish: Echoes of Stadia’s Downfall?

The Cloud Gaming Challenge: Lessons from Stadia

Amazon has updated the support page for Luna, revealing that the service is losing many of its distinguishing features compared to competitors.

Luna is shifting to become an add-on to Prime subscriptions, veering away from its initial aim of being a full-fledged gaming marketplace.

While NVIDIA GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming are expanding, Luna is headed in a different direction. If you’ve purchased games or linked libraries on the platform, now is the time to check your account and download your saves before the deadline.

From April 10, Amazon Luna will no longer allow purchasing games individually, subscribing to third-party services through the platform, or using integrated stores. Subscriptions to Ubisoft Plus and Jackbox acquired via Luna, and integrations with EA, Ubisoft, and GOG stores, are being discontinued. The Bring Your Own Library feature, which enabled playing from personal libraries on other platforms, is also ceasing operations.

Those who have bought games or connected libraries have until June 10 to retrieve content before it’s removed from the platform. Subscriptions to Ubisoft Plus and Jackbox, made through Luna, will be automatically canceled after the last billing cycle unless the player decides to cancel earlier. Game progress can be downloaded for 90 days post-June 10, but compatibility with other platforms will vary based on the specific publisher and game.

Amazon presents these reductions as a response to player feedback, claiming users prefer straightforward access to games, with more Luna content now accessible to Prime subscribers. However, the support page that Amazon released essentially lists what users will no longer have access to. The narrative of simplification contrasts with the actual scope of changes.

This situation underscores a primary issue with cloud gaming: the games reside on external servers, and their fate is dictated by the company’s decisions, not the player’s. This is reminiscent of Google Stadia’s closure in 2023—a service that held high expectations but failed to attract a significant user base. Launched in 2020 as a competitor to Stadia, GeForce Now, and Microsoft xCloud, Amazon Luna never achieved mainstream success.
