A24 has released the debut trailer for the feature-length horror film “Backrooms,” directed by British-American filmmaker Kane Parsons.<\/p>\n
“I discovered this place. It’s vast, stretching endlessly. All these rooms. This place constructs them. Actually, it remembers them. And the longer it remembers something, the less it remembers it,” explains Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character.<\/p>\n
The screenplay is penned by Roberto Patino and Will Sudek, while James Wan and Michael Clear are on board as producers.<\/p>\n
The concept for Parsons’ series was inspired by a viral photograph that circulated widely on various forums. The image depicted an empty room with a peculiar atmosphere. Soon after, a conceptual narrative emerged about these “backrooms” as entities existing beyond conventional space. Using this idea, the young director crafted his own series.<\/p>\n
In 2022, the then-16-year-old Parsons released his first video, which amassed 71 million views. Subsequently, he produced another 22 short clips featuring a research group called Async exploring an alternate reality. A year after the series gained traction on YouTube, A24 secured the rights to create a full-length film adaptation.<\/p>\n
Previously, we reported that A24 had hired the 19-year-old YouTuber as the director for the feature horror “Backrooms.” This move aligns with a recent trend where YouTube creators are getting opportunities from major studios. The Philippou brothers, known for their RackaRacka channel, followed a similar path with their film “Talk to Me,” which became an unexpected success. David F. Sandberg, creator of the short “Lights Out,” also transitioned to a full-length version before moving on to direct “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” in the DC Universe.<\/p>\n

“Backrooms” is a full-length adaptation of the eponymous series by 20-year-old Parsons, which gained massive popularity on YouTube. The series presents a chilling collection of nearly two dozen videos set in an infinite space filled with rooms featuring eerie wallpapers and fluorescent lighting. Moreover, the claustrophobic confined spaces are inhabited by terrifying creatures.<\/p>\n
Notable actors in the “Backrooms” film include Oscar nominees Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value”) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”), as well as Emmy Award winner Mark Duplass and Lukita Maxwell from the Apple TV series “Therapy.” The film’s premiere is scheduled for May 29. In the teaser, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character informs Renate Reinsve’s character about the discovery of an endless space.<\/p>\n
