  • Vodafone to Launch Satellite Connectivity in Ukraine with AST SpaceMobile Partnership: What You Need to Know

During MWC Barcelona, Vodafone Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AST SpaceMobile, a company dedicated to building a global satellite-based mobile network.

Vodafone will update its tariffs starting March 1, with increases of up to 70 UAH in both prepaid and contract plans.

This partnership aims to emulate Kyivstar’s Direct-to-Cell service powered by Starlink, allowing standard smartphones to access high-speed internet and voice services directly from satellites, without requiring any special devices or additional applications. AST SpaceMobile’s low-Earth orbit satellites will enhance the ground network, ensuring coverage in areas where terrestrial infrastructure is either unavailable or damaged.

Vodafone’s release does not specify dates or timelines for implementing this technology in Ukraine. However, the companies intend to meticulously plan each phase of the commercial launch, from marketing strategies and radio frequency utilization to optimizing customer experience. The collaboration will adhere strictly to technical standards and regulatory requirements.

It’s worth noting that Ukraine was the first in Europe to pilot Direct-to-Cell technology. In late November, the service was made available to all Kyivstar users with Android smartphones supporting 4G/LTE, later expanding to iOS devices. As of January 2026, the operator connected over 3 million Ukrainians to Starlink satellite services, facilitating 1.2 million SMS transmissions, primarily in Kyiv, Lviv, and Vinnytsia.
